This post is part of a series that dives into the idea of collecting user contact information within mobile apps to drive more revenue.
Part 3/3: Earn More Cash – How to monetize your users with email.
I will dig into what to do with these emails after you get them.
Before we jump strait into monetization of your app users with email, let’s point out a few things:
A.) Your objective should not be to spam or scam your subscribers. You are trying to provide massive value to them for free with content that will engage and inform. Things like sending how to videos, new blog posts revolving around your industry or app, feature updates, feedback requests, user features, etc
B.) By doing the things in #1 you are providing value and warming up the audience. Your open rates will be high and they will get used to opening up emails from you. When you do decide to monetize, it doesn’t even have to be the main focus of your emails. It could be with a mention or a PS,. Read more below on how you can monetize your users and what it looks like.
So, now let’s talk about ideas to monetize your users with email!
1.) Drive more single everyday in app purchases.
After a user purchases one IAP, they enter into an automation based off that purchase that will send a thank you message, a reminder + request for feedback. In that email I show 8 opportunities to monetize within 1 email. Some are subtle and some are direct. Most of the links that mention an IAP or subscription option are deep links. This takes them within a specific section of the app we mention so they don’t get hung up or frustrated trying to find it.
2.) Convert free users into paying app subscribers
3.) Offer an up-sell you monetize outside the app
This example shows how a button within an app takes them to a sales and checkout page. It’s also helpful that 50% is donated to charity that will resonate with the audience.
4.) Be an influencer
Recommend another related app and make sure they get you an affiliate link so there will be clear numbers on how much revenue you downloaded from your link. For iOS apps this is easy to do within ITC. Email me if you have questions.
5.) Recommend another app of yours.
Just send a friendly email positioned in a way that says, “We thought you might like our other app for ______ because it does _________. You can check it out by clicking here.”
6.) Pitch affiliate products outside the app
These could be courses, books, niche stuff. I don’t recommend sending an email that says, “hey, buy this because it’s cool”. I recommend building a story behind why you are recommending this product / service and how you only recommend things you use personally. Also disclose it’s an affiliate link.
7.) Sell your own physical products
8.) Start a private Facebook group
You charge for this. Just use something like Gumroad to keep costs low to manage a single purchases or subscriptions. Email list and tell them why they should join (benefits), provide a link to checkout. I recommend subscription, but if you want to offer a onetime purchase make sure it’s high enough to cover the estimated average churn rate. Once they pay, just manually add them to the group.
9.) Sell tickets to an event or meetup
Depending on the app niche you could be sitting on an opportunity to simply host the event. Use something like gumroad or sendowl to create a simple product page and send them a link. You can still use PayPal to process payments. You can even use PayPal for everything, it just won’t have many details for the prospect to read. You could make up for that having the email be like your sales page providing all the info they need.
10.) Start a prelaunch list for another app or project
Something I find really exciting is leveraging your existing assets to grow new ones. So if you have an email list for an app and you start another project then find a way to relate to that audience and invite them to come be a part of it. It doesn’t have to be the same niche. For example, you have an app that might have a range of people in it. Let’s say this app is an emoji app. Now you are starting a new blog for moms that run side businesses to earn extra money for the family. I bet there are some moms in your user base and maybe have a side business or would like to start a side business. That might be too niche, but you get the point. Maybe the blog is just for moms in general.
11.) Start a members only site
Like a private blog where you charge a monthly fee to get exclusive videos, posts and _____. Host on wordpress and use a member plugin. See the top 5 compared by clicking here.
12.) Run a contest
Something where your existing subscribers are bribed to share with their friends to get more entries into the contest. Those that hear about it through a friend is also encouraged to share so they get more entries and so on. This gets you more subscribers which can get you more app users and people to do any of the above with. They could be your prospect list. Check out sites like raffle copter. To see other options just type in raffle copter vs into google and see what comes up.
13.) Sell a service
Could be coaching, dog walking ect. Depends on the niche and locations. A service would be easier to scale. You app might work better as a lead magnet than a “monetizer”. They download for free and get into your funnel. From there you monetize them outside the app for a service.
14.) Get a sponsor for your emails
I haven’t seen this lately, but know it’s been done. Just like people do with podcasts. You may need a larger list to attract a sponsor OR a highly targeted and engaged list. This makes the most sense if the sponsor can obviously hit their objective. Maybe it’s new leads, or sales or entries into a contest.
15.) Give referral to someone else’s service
Similar to #13, but instead you are being an affiliate for someone else’s service. Maybe you have the list, but don’t have an awesome product or service. That’s where affiliate marketing comes into play.
16.) Drive more expiring in app purchase offers.
This one is similar to #1, but instead of promoting in app purchases that are always there, why not promote some that are only available through the email and for a limited time. Slap a discount + incentive on it and you are ready to go! I’m going to do a dedicated blog post on how top grossing apps do this, but for the sake of this example, I’ll just include one image from Slotmania.
I’m sure there are many more. I will take a look at the App Store and see, but remember these are specific to earning more money from apps using email! Even if the source is within the app, we are using email as a tool to get users to take an action that ultimately leads to more revenue. That action might just be to open the app more which in turn leads to more conversions.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO NOW?
1.) Take a look at how you can incorporate some of these ideas in your existing apps. If you don’t have any apps or want to start fresh, think about how these things can play a role in how you develop your new projects. Monetizing for an app doesn’t start when you finish the app. It starts wayyyy before.
